Review: HOT Justice by Lynn Raye Harris

hot justiceTitle: HOT Justice

Author: Lynn Raye Harris

Year of publication: Out today! I was kindly given a copy to read and review

The heroine: Journalist Haylee Jamison

The hero: HOT team member Dean “Wolf” Garner

The blurb: Dean “Wolf” Garner is the kind of guy who loves hard and leaves fast. From the moment he rescues reporter Haylee Jamison in the Guatemalan jungle, he can’t stop thinking about the dark-haired beauty. His life is too complicated for romantic entanglements though–and not even a woman like Haylee can convince him otherwise.

Haylee wasn’t supposed to be in the drug cartel’s compound, but she was captured while on a mission of her own: find the trail of fake opioids entering the US and halt the operation. Back home in DC, Haylee can’t stop thinking about the gorgeous military operator who rocked her world for one steamy night before leaving. But when she uncovers a conspiracy and finds herself in danger, there’s only one man she trusts to keep her safe.

It’s easy for Wolf to risk his life to protect Haylee and give her the justice she desires. The hard part is taking a chance and admitting what’s in his heart before it’s too late.

Before he loses the best thing that’s ever happened to him.

Standalone or series: This is book fourteen in the Hostile Operations Team series, but can be read as a standalone

The review: I’ve yet to meet a book by Lynn that I don’t absolutely love, and HOT Justice is no exception! Dean and his team are in Guatemala to rescue ten Americans there on a mission, but when they get to the rescue site there find eleven Americans being held. The eleventh hostage is a beautiful, dark-haired woman named Haylee Jamison, and when Dean saves her from being attached by a captor, she instantly places her trust in him.

The hostages are taken to El Salvador before going home, and neither Dean or Haylee can deny the attraction between them. What starts as a friendly game of pool ends in a night of passion neither of them have experienced before, and it rattles Dean. When they both make it back to US soil, they go their separate ways, much to Haylee’s disappointment.

A couple of months pass and they cross paths again. When Dean realises that Haylee is continuing on with the story that had her in Guatemala in the first place – fake drugs being trafficked into the US, some of which killed her best friend – and that certain high level politicians and businessmen could be involved, he fears for her safety.

When those fears are realised, Dean finds himself willing to do whatever he has to in order to keep the woman he can’t get off his mind safe. But his job is dangerous and not a lot of women can cope with the constant worry and uncertainty… so Haylee must decide whether she loves Dean enough to take a chance on a relationship with him, and Dean must decide if he loves her enough to fight for her. Another gripping installment in an incredible series.

The heroine: Hacker Bliss Bennett

The hero: HOT team member/hacker Sky Kelley

The blurb: It was supposed to be a simple job for hacker Bliss Bennett: access confidential files and turn them over to the CIA. But something went wrong—and now Bliss has a target on her back. With no idea who to trust, she heads straight toward the one man she hopes won’t turn her away.

Sky “Hacker” Kelley is a badass Special Operator with lethal moves and mad computer skills. He hasn’t seen his former lover—former wife—in four years, not since she nearly cost him his military career. Her arrival on his doorstep in the middle of the night reveals a gut-deep truth—he might want nothing to do with her, but he still wants her. And as much as he’d love to slam the door in her face, Sky isn’t wired to turn away anyone in distress.

Protecting Bliss won’t be easy. The files she stole are at the heart of a dangerous conspiracy, and someone is willing to do whatever it takes—including kill—to get them back. It’ll take all Sky’s considerable black-ops skills to keep Bliss safe—and all his willpower to resist falling into her bed, and her life, ever again…

Standalone or series: Book thirteen of the Hostile Operations Team series, but can be read as a standalone

The review: It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of ex-husband and wife books, and Lynn Raye Harris has just served us one of the best I’ve read yet. The newest in the HOT series, we’re told the story of Sky ‘Hacker’ Kelley and Bliss ‘Briar Rose’ Bennett. Bliss is a professional hacker for hire, and four years previously she was hired to find proof that a military captain was involved in something shady. One of his men was Sky, and Bliss decided to get closer to the target by getting friendly with his men, but she never anticipated falling into bed with him two hours after they met, marrying him a month later, or him ending it five months after that because he found out about her assignment.

Bliss regrets Sky finding out the way he did and she regrets their marriage ending, because their chemistry was explosive. When her latest assignment appears to make her a target, she turns to the only man she’s ever truly trusted, knowing he’s too good of a man to turn her away.

Sky wants to, because this woman – this woman he can’t stop being attracted to, even though he wants nothing to do with her – almost ruined his career and certainly ruined his trust in relationships. When he realises Bliss really is being targeted, he agrees to help her and brings the HOT team into it when they discover what’s going on – but she has to stop lying to him, hard for a woman who trusts nobody.

The mystery of who wants Bliss dead starts to unravel, and the exes finally give in to the lust and desire that continues to haunt them. Once they actually start to communicate without telling lies and hiding truths, they find that perhaps it’s just not chemistry in the bedroom that they share.

Another five-star read from this author. If you haven’t read any of her books, you’re really missing a treat.
